Complete Skills Guide
Stardew Valley features five skills: Farming, Fishing, Mining, Foraging, and Combat. Each skill levels up as you perform related activities, unlocking recipes, crafting abilities, and profession choices that define your playstyle. This guide covers all five skills in detail, including XP requirements, sources of experience, profession choices with analysis, and the Mastery system available after maxing all skills.
Skill Level Progression
All five skills follow the same XP progression from Level 1 to Level 10:
| Level | XP Needed | Cumulative XP | Milestone |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 100 | 100 | Basic unlock |
| 2 | 150 | 250 | Recipe or craft unlock |
| 3 | 250 | 500 | Recipe or craft unlock |
| 4 | 400 | 900 | Recipe or craft unlock |
| 5 | 600 | 1,500 | First profession choice |
| 6 | 800 | 2,300 | Recipe or craft unlock |
| 7 | 1,000 | 3,300 | Recipe or craft unlock |
| 8 | 1,200 | 4,500 | Recipe or craft unlock |
| 9 | 1,500 | 6,000 | Recipe or craft unlock |
| 10 | 2,000 | 8,000 | Second profession choice |
Farming Skill
Farming is arguably the most important skill in Stardew Valley. It levels up from harvesting crops, petting animals, milking, shearing, and producing artisan goods.
XP Sources
| Activity | XP Gained |
|---|---|
| Harvesting crops | +5 per harvest (per crop tile) |
| Petting animals | +5 per animal per day |
| Milking cows/goats | +5 per milking |
| Shearing sheep | +5 per shearing |
| Picking up animal products | +5 per product |
| Producing artisan goods | +5 per item |
Farming Level Unlocks
| Level | Unlock |
|---|---|
| 1 | Basic farming ability |
| 2 | Mayonnaise Machine recipe |
| 3 | Bee House recipe |
| 4 | Preserves Jar recipe |
| 5 | Profession choice: Rancher or Tiller |
| 6 | Cheese Press recipe |
| 7 | Keg recipe |
| 8 | Mill recipe |
| 9 | Seed Maker recipe |
| 10 | Iridium Sprinkler recipe + second profession |
Farming Professions
| Level | Choice A | Choice B |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Rancher: Animal products worth 20% more | Tiller: Crops worth 10% more |
| 10 (Rancher) | Coopmaster: Coop animals produce faster, incubation time halved | Shepherd: Barn animals produce faster, incubation time halved |
| 10 (Tiller) | Artisan: Artisan goods (wine, cheese, etc.) worth 40% more | Agriculturist: Crops grow 10% faster |
Recommended: The Tiller + Artisan combo is widely considered the best profession path in the entire game. The 40% bonus to artisan goods dramatically increases profits from wine, cheese, preserves, and all other processed items. Since most late-game money-making strategies involve processing crops into artisan goods, this bonus scales infinitely with your production.
Rancher is generally considered weaker because the 20% bonus only applies to raw animal products, not processed goods like cheese or mayonnaise. The Coopmaster and Shepherd bonuses are nice but do not compare to the Artisan bonus.
Fishing Skill
Fishing levels up from catching fish, completing fishing quests, and using crab pots.
XP Sources
| Activity | XP Gained |
|---|---|
| Catching fish | 5-40 XP per catch (varies by difficulty) |
| Completing fishing quests | 50-200 XP per quest |
| Crab pot catches | 5 XP per catch |
Fishing Level Unlocks
| Level | Unlock |
|---|---|
| 1 | Bamboo Pole (given by Willy) |
| 2 | Fiberglass Rod available for purchase (1,800g) |
| 3 | Bait available for purchase |
| 4 | Crab Pot recipe |
| 5 | Profession choice: Fisher or Trapper |
| 6 | Dressed Spinner available |
| 7 | Cork Bobber available |
| 8 | Barbed Hook available |
| 9 | iridium Rod available for purchase (7,500g) |
| 10 | Second profession + Treasure Hunter title |
Fishing Professions
| Level | Choice A | Choice B |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Fisher: Fish worth 25% more | Trapper: Crab pots require no bait |
| 10 (Fisher) | Angler: Fish worth 50% more (total) | Pirate: Double chance to find treasure |
| 10 (Trapper) | Luremaster: Crab pots require no bait | Mariner: Crab pots never produce trash |
Recommended: Angler is the best choice for active fishers who catch fish manually. The 50% bonus to fish sell prices is significant. For passive fishing with crab pots, the Mariner + Luremaster combo is ideal because crab pots never produce trash and never need bait.
Mining Skill
Mining levels up from breaking rocks and killing monsters in the mines.
XP Sources
| Activity | XP Gained |
|---|---|
| Breaking rocks | +1 per rock |
| Killing mine monsters | +5-15 per monster depending on type |
| Breaking geodes | +5 per geode |
Mining Level Unlocks

|---|---|
| 1 | Pickaxe ability (unlocked at start) |
| 2 | Copper ore found more frequently |
| 3 | Coal can be found in rocks |
| 4 | Double chance to find geodes |

| 6 | Double chance to find coal |

| 10 (Miner) | Blacksmith: Metal bars worth 50% more | Prospector: Double chance for coal |
| 10 (Geologist) | Excavator: Double geode finds | Gemologist: Gems worth 30% more |
Recommended: Miner + Blacksmith is great if you plan to sell bars for profit. Geologist + Excavator is best for collecting artifacts and minerals for the museum and bundles. Gemologist is useful if you sell gems regularly.
Foraging Skill
Foraging levels up from picking forageables, chopping trees, and collecting tapper products.
XP Sources
| Activity | XP Gained |
|---|---|
| Picking forageables | +7 per item |
| Chopping trees | +1 per chop |
| Collecting tapper products | +7 per item |
| Digging up forage | +7 per item |
Foraging Level Unlocks
| Level | Unlock |
|---|---|
| 1 | Wild Seeds (Spring) recipe |
| 2 | Tapper recipe |
| 3 | Wild Seeds (Summer) recipe |
| 4 | Tapper recipe (improved) |
| 5 | Profession choice: Forester or Gatherer |
| 6 | Wild Seeds (Fall) recipe |
| 7 | Wild Seeds (Winter) recipe |
| 8 | Charcoal Kiln recipe |
| 9 | Tree Fertilizer recipe |
| 10 | Second profession + Botanist title |
Foraging Professions

|---|---|---|
| 5 | Forester: Trees drop 25% more wood | Gatherer: Double harvest chance |
| 10 (Forester) | Tapper: Syrup worth 25% more | Lumberjack: Normal trees can drop hardwood |
| 10 (Gatherer) | Botanist: Foraged items always iridium quality | Tracker: Shows forageable locations on map |
Recommended: Gatherer + Botanist is the strongest foraging combo. All foraged items being iridium quality means maximum sell prices and guaranteed iridium-quality gifts. The double harvest chance from Gatherer also provides more items overall. Tracker is useful if you struggle to find forageable items, but Botanist is generally more profitable.
Combat Skill
Combat levels up from killing monsters throughout the game.
XP Sources
| Activity | XP Gained |
|---|---|
| Killing monsters | +2-15 per monster depending on type |
| Killing slimes | +2-5 per slime |
| Killing serpents | +10-15 per serpent |
| Killing shadow creatures | +8-12 per creature |
Combat Level Unlocks

| 2 | Wooden Blade found in mines |
| 3 | Sturdy Ring available at Guild |
| 4 | Fighter or Scout profession prep |
| 5 | Profession choice: Fighter or Scout |
| 6 | Steel Sword available at Guild |
| 7 | Hero Ring available at Guild |
| 8 | Master Slingshot recipe |
| 9 | Slime Charmer Ring (at 1,000 slimes) |
| 10 | Second profession + Defender title |
Combat Professions
| Level | Choice A | Choice B |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Fighter: +10% damage | Scout: +50% critical hit chance |
| 10 (Fighter) | Brute: +15% damage (total +25%) | Defender: +25 defense |
| 10 (Scout) | Acrobat: Special move cooldown halved | Desperado: +25% damage at low HP |
Recommended: Fighter + Brute provides the most consistent and reliable damage increase. The +25% damage bonus applies to every hit, making combat faster and safer. Scout + Desperado rewards aggressive playstyles but is riskier since it requires low HP to be effective.
