Foraging Guide
Foraging is one of the five main skills in Stardew Valley. It involves collecting wild plants, mushrooms, and other items that spawn naturally throughout the valley. Foraging provides early-game income, cooking ingredients, gift items, and resources for crafting. This guide covers every forageable item organized by season, all tree types and their products, tapper mechanics, foraging skill professions, seasonal profitability analysis, and tree planting strategies.

Tree Types and Products
Stardew Valley has several tree types, each producing different resources when tapped or chopped.
Tree Types Overview
| Tree Type | Seed Source | Product (Tapper) | Wood Type | Growth Time | Notes |
|---|
| Oak | Acorn (forage in fall) | Oak Resin | Wood | 10-12 days | Most common tree |
| Maple | Maple Seed (forage) | Maple Syrup | Wood | 10-12 days | Common tree |
| Pine | Pine Cone (forage) | Pine Tar | Wood | 10-12 days | Common tree |
| Mahogany | Mahogany Seed (island) | Syrup | Hardwood | 12-15 days | Ginger Island only |
| Mushroom Tree | Mushroom Tree Seed | Mushrooms (forage) | Wood | N/A | Grown from mushroom tree seed |
| Fruit Tree | Purchase from Pierre | Fruit | Wood | 28 days to mature | All seasons except winter |
Tree Growth Stages
Trees go through five growth stages from seed to maturity:
| Stage | Duration | Appearance | Notes |
|---|
| Seed | Day 1 | Small sprout | Can be destroyed easily |
| Sprout | 2-4 days | Small tree | Still fragile |
| Sapling | 4-8 days | Medium tree | Cannot be destroyed by axe |
| Tree | 4-8 days | Full size | Produces seeds in fall |
| Mature | Ongoing | Full size | Can be tapped |
Tree Planting Tips
- Trees need space to grow. They cannot grow if adjacent tiles are occupied.
- Plant trees in a grid pattern with at least 1 empty tile between each tree.
- Trees do not grow in winter.
- Fruit trees need 8 empty surrounding tiles to grow. Plant them with 2 tiles of space between each tree.
- You can plant trees in the Greenhouse for year-round fruit production.
Tapper Products
Tappers can be placed on mature trees to collect syrup, resin, or tar every few days. The crafting recipe is unlocked at Foraging Level 4.
Tapper Products Table
| Tree | Product | Processing Time | Sell Price | Iridium Price (Botanist) | Uses |

Recommended: Gatherer + Botanist is the strongest foraging combo. All foraged items being iridium quality means maximum sell prices and guaranteed quality for gifts. The double harvest chance from Gatherer also provides more items overall.
Seasonal Foraging Profitability
Daily Foraging Income by Season (with Botanist)
| Season | Daily Forage Value (Iridium) | Best Forageable | Notes |
|---|
| Spring | 200-400g | Leek (120g each) | Moderate income |
| Summer | 300-600g | Fiddlehead Fern (180g each) | Secret Woods access needed |
| Fall | 500-1,000g | Chanterelle (320g each) | Best foraging season |
| Winter | 200-400g | Snow Yam (200g each) | Requires hoeing |
Foraging vs Farming Profitability
Foraging provides a reliable passive income stream that requires no investment. While farming is generally more profitable, foraging has several advantages:
- No initial investment: Forageables are free to collect.
- No maintenance: No watering, fertilizing, or pest control needed.
- Supplements farming: Foraging income adds to farming income without competing for time or resources.
- Early game importance: Foraging is one of the best income sources in the first few days of the game.
Foraging Tips
- Forage daily. Items respawn each day in their respective season.
- Unlock the Secret Woods by throwing a hardwood into the log blocking the entrance (north of the farm). This area has unique forageables.
- Plant Wild Seeds on your farm for additional forageable production.
- Place tappers on trees around your farm for passive syrup income.
- Use the Tracker profession if you struggle to find forageable items.
- Save mushrooms for the Community Center bundles and for gifts.
- Forage on Ginger Island for year-round tropical items.
- Check the farm daily for seasonal forageables that spawn on your farm.
- Use the Botanist profession to maximize the value of all foraged items.
- Combine foraging with other activities since foraging spots are often near fishing, mining, or social locations.
