Stardew Valley Forge Enchantments Guide

The Volcano Forge on Ginger Island is your one-stop shop for upgrading weapons and enchanting both tools and weapons. This guide covers every forging gem, every enchantment, their exact effects, costs, and the best strategies for getting what you want.

Weapon Forging

Weapon forging is the process of applying gem-based stat upgrades to your weapons at the Volcano Forge. You can forge a weapon up to three times, and the gem you choose determines which stat gets boosted. Each forge level stacks, so applying Ruby three times gives +30% damage total.

Forging Costs

Forging Gems and Their Effects

GemEffect Per Forge LevelNotes
Ruby+10% damage to both minimum and maximum damage valuesFlat percentage boost applied per level. Three forges = +30% damage.
Aquamarine+4.6% critical hit chance (flat addition, not multiplicative)Each level adds 4.6 percentage points. Three forges = +13.8% crit chance.
Emerald+2 speed (1st and 3rd level), +3 speed (2nd level)Total speed at three forges: +7. Speed reduces swing time.
Jade+10% critical hit damage per levelBoosts the critical damage multiplier. Three forges = +30% crit damage.
Topaz+1 Defense per levelGrants +1 player Defense per forge level. Three forges = +3 Defense.
Amethyst+1 Knockback (weight) per levelIncreases knockback distance by 10% per level. Three forges = +30% knockback.
DiamondFills ALL remaining forge levels with random upgradesCosts only 10 Cinder Shards regardless of remaining forge slots. The random upgrades can include any of the above gem effects.

Diamond Forging Details

The Diamond is unique: instead of picking a stat, it fills every remaining unforged level on the weapon with a random gem effect. This costs a flat 10 Cinder Shards no matter how many levels remain. If you have zero unforged levels, Diamond cannot be used. The random effects are drawn from the pool of all six standard gems (Ruby, Aquamarine, Emerald, Jade, Topaz, Amethyst).

Combat Enchantments

Combat enchantments are applied to weapons at the Volcano Forge. They provide powerful utility effects that can completely change how a weapon performs. Each weapon can hold only one enchantment at a time β€” applying a new one overwrites the old one.

Cost: 1 Prismatic Shard + 20 Cinder Shards

EnchantmentEffectNotes
Artful50% cooldown reduction on special movesReduces special move cooldown to 50% of normal. With the Acrobat profession (Brute skill tree), this improves to 75% cooldown reduction.
Bug KillerDouble damage to grubs, flies, bugs, spiders, and rock crabs. Allows killing armored bugs without needing to flip them first.Excellent for the Mines and lower Skull Cavern levels where bugs are common. Armored bugs normally need to be flipped, but this enchantment bypasses that requirement.
Crusader50% more damage to mummies, ghosts, skeletons, and void spirits. Allows killing mummies without bombs.Mummies normally revive after being killed unless you bomb them. Crusader lets you kill them permanently with any hit, making it essential for the Skull Cavern and Quarry Mine.
Vampiric9% chance on kill to heal the player for 9% to ~10.67% of the monster’s maximum HPThe heal amount does not scale with your weapon damage β€” it is based on the monster’s max HP. This means it is more effective against tougher enemies.
Haymaker50% chance to drop Fiber when cutting weeds. 33% chance for extra Hay when cutting wheat.Extra Hay goes directly into any Silo on your farm. This is the only combat enchantment with a farming utility, making it great for a weapon you carry while doing farm work.

Combat Enchantment Strategy

  • Best all-around: Crusader for Skull Cavern diving, since mummies are one of the most dangerous enemies and appear frequently at deeper levels.
  • For sustained combat: Vampiric provides passive healing that keeps you alive in long Skull Cavern runs, especially against high-HP monsters.
  • For speedrunning: Artful with the Acrobat profession lets you spam special moves, dramatically increasing your clear speed.
  • For farm utility: Haymaker turns any weapon into a weed-clearing, hay-producing tool. Pair it with a fast-swinging weapon for best results.

Innate Enchantments

Innate enchantments are special random enchantments that can appear on weapons dropped by monsters or found in chests. Unlike forge enchantments, these are built into the weapon itself and cannot be applied manually. If you want a specific innate enchantment, you will need to find or re-roll weapons until you get it.

Important: You cannot add an innate enchantment to a Galaxy Sword, Galaxy Dagger, or Infinity weapons. These weapons are excluded from the innate enchantment pool.

Cost to apply at the Forge: 1 Dragon Tooth + 10 Cinder Shards (applies a random innate enchantment to a non-Galaxy/Infinity weapon)

Set 1 β€” Non-Guaranteed Innate Enchantments

These innates have a chance to appear but are not guaranteed in the roll pool:

EnchantmentEffectDetails
+1-2 DefenseGrants bonus player Defense when heldOnly available on weapons that are level 10 or lower. Higher-level weapons cannot roll this innate.
-1 to -5 WeightReduces knockback by 10% to 50%Each level of weight reduction lowers knockback distance by 10%. At -5, knockback is halved. This can be useful for keeping enemies close for continued attacking.
Slime GathererIncreased slime drop rate from killed slimesGrants more drops from slimes. This effect is not affected by food/buff bonuses or luck, making it a fixed boost.

Set 2 β€” Guaranteed Innate Enchantments

These innates are always part of the possible roll pool:

EnchantmentEffectDetails
Slime Slayer33% + 1 bonus damage to SlimesAdds flat extra damage against Slimes only. Does not apply to Big Slimes, only regular Slimes. The formula is: +33% of weapon damage + 1.
+25 to +75 Crit. PowerIncreases critical hit damage multiplierEach point adds to the crit multiplier. At +75, crits deal 2.5x damage instead of the default 2.0x (assuming base crit power). A substantial damage boost for critical-hit builds.
+1 to +3 Crit. ChanceIncreases critical hit chance multiplierEach level applies a multiplier to your crit chance: +1 = 1.02x, +2 = 1.04x, +3 = 1.06x. This is a multiplier on your total crit chance, not a flat addition.
+1 to +5 AttackAdds flat bonus damageEach level grants +3 to +15 actual damage (the visible +1 through +5 is multiplied internally). This stacks with all other damage bonuses.
+1 to +X SpeedReduces swing time by 10% per levelEach level makes the weapon swing 10% faster. The maximum number of levels depends on the base weapon β€” faster weapons can get fewer speed levels. The total speed from all sources (including Emerald forging) is capped at 4.

Innate Enchantment Tiers

Innate enchantments come in different tiers which affect the magnitude of the bonus. Higher-tier innates provide stronger effects. The tier is influenced by the level of the monster that dropped the weapon and other factors.

Tool Enchantments

Tool enchantments are applied at the Volcano Forge and provide powerful quality-of-life and efficiency upgrades to your tools. Each tool can hold only one enchantment at a time.

Cost: 1 Prismatic Shard + 20 Cinder Shards

Enchantment Details by Tool

Auto-Hook (Fishing Rod)

Automatically hooks fish or junk the moment they bite. You no longer need to press the use button when a fish bites β€” the rod does it for you. This effectively eliminates the reaction-time element of fishing and is extremely helpful for players who struggle with timing, or for AFK fishing setups with bait.

Archaeologist (Hoe and Pan)

  • Hoe: Doubles the number of artifact spots that spawn on tilled soil each day. Artifact spots are the little worms sticking out of the ground. With this enchantment, you get roughly twice as many chances to dig up artifacts daily.
  • Pan: When panning in water, you receive 4x the number of Artifact Troves, 2x the number of Bone Fragments, and 3.5x the number of artifacts. This is a massive boost for Museum completion and makes panning highly profitable.

Bottomless (Watering Can)

Your Watering Can never runs out of water. You can water crops infinitely without needing to refill at a pond, well, or other water source. This saves a significant amount of time each morning, especially on large farms. One of the most universally useful tool enchantments.

Efficient (Pickaxe, Axe, Hoe, Watering Can)

Tool use costs zero energy. All four tools benefit from this enchantment, making it incredibly versatile. This is especially valuable early in the day when energy conservation matters, and it effectively eliminates the need for energy-restoring food during tool-based activities. Note that this does not reduce the stamina cost of weapons β€” only the four listed tools.

Generous (Hoe and Pan)

  • Hoe: 50% chance to get double items when digging. This applies to all hoe-dug items including artifact spots, ores, and resources.
  • Pan: Increases the maximum number of non-ore items you can receive from a single pan. Combined with Archaeologist, this makes the Pan one of the most rewarding tools in the game.

Fisher (Pan)

Gives a 10% chance of receiving a fish as a panning reward. The fish can be from any freshwater pool and includes rare catches. This is a niche but fun enchantment that adds variety to panning and can help complete the fish collection without actively fishing.

Master (Pickaxe, Axe, Hoe, Watering Can, Fishing Rod)

The ultimate tool enchantment. Master combines all three of the tool-specific bonus effects into a single enchantment. For the Hoe, this means Efficient + Generous + Archaeologist effects all at once. For the Pickaxe, it means Efficient plus the tool’s inherent bonuses. For the Fishing Rod, it means Auto-Hook plus the rod’s fishing bonuses. This is the single best enchantment for any tool that supports it.

Shaving (Axe)

Chopping large stumps and large logs now produces Hardwood instead of regular Wood. Normally, large stumps and logs yield regular Wood, while only Mahogany Trees and the specific large stumps/logs in the Secret Woods yield Hardwood. With Shaving, every large stump and log becomes a Hardwood source, making it incredibly easy to stockpile Hardwood for crafting.

Reaching (Fishing Rod)

Increases your maximum casting distance by 1 tile per enchantment level. While Reaching can technically roll multiple levels, the primary benefit is reaching fishing spots that are farther from shore. This can grant access to deeper water tiles that may have better fish availability in certain locations.

Strategy: Best Enchantments for Each Tool

Pickaxe

  1. Master β€” Best overall. Combines Efficient (no energy cost) with other bonuses. Makes daily mining and rock-cracking effortless.
  2. Efficient β€” If you do not have a Prismatic Shard to spare, this is the next best thing. Zero energy cost on your Pickaxe is huge for extended mining sessions.

Axe

  1. Master β€” Combines Efficient with Shaving. You get zero energy cost plus Hardwood from every large stump and log.
  2. Shaving β€” If energy is not a concern, Shaving alone turns every large stump into a Hardwood source.
  3. Efficient β€” Zero energy cost for all chopping. Great if you have other sources of Hardwood.

Hoe

  1. Master β€” The absolute best choice. Combines Efficient (no energy), Generous (50% double items), and Archaeologist (2x artifact spots) into one enchantment. Essential for Museum completion and efficient tilling.
  2. Archaeologist β€” Doubles artifact spots, dramatically speeding up artifact hunting.
  3. Generous β€” 50% chance for double items when digging.

Watering Can

  1. Bottomless β€” The undisputed best choice. Infinite water means you never need to refill, saving significant time every single day.
  2. Master β€” Also excellent, combining Bottomless with Efficient for infinite water and zero energy cost.
  3. Efficient β€” No energy cost for watering. Useful if you do not mind refilling.

Fishing Rod

  1. Master β€” Combines Auto-Hook with enhanced fishing bonuses. The most powerful fishing rod enchantment available.
  2. Auto-Hook β€” Eliminates the need to react to fish bites. Perfect for players who want to relax while fishing or who miss bites frequently.
  3. Reaching β€” Niche but useful in specific spots where casting farther gives access to better fish.

Pan

  1. Master β€” Best overall for panning, combining Archaeologist’s increased Artifact Troves and artifacts with Generous’s increased item yield and Fisher’s fish chance.
  2. Archaeologist β€” The single most impactful Pan enchantment. 4x Artifact Troves, 2x Bone Fragments, and 3.5x artifacts make panning extremely rewarding.

Tips for Re-Rolling Enchantments

When you enchant a tool or weapon, the enchantment you receive is randomly selected from the pool of valid enchantments for that item. If you do not get the one you want, you can try again.

How to Re-Roll

  1. Apply an enchantment at the forge.
  2. If it is not the one you want, you can apply another enchantment to overwrite it.
  3. This costs another 1 Prismatic Shard + 20 Cinder Shards each time.

Save-Scumming Method

The most efficient way to get a specific enchantment:

  1. Save your game before visiting the forge (sleep in your bed to save).
  2. Go to the Volcano Forge and apply the enchantment.
  3. Check the result immediately.
  4. If you did not get what you want, reload the day (quit to title without saving) and try again.
  5. Repeat until you get the desired enchantment.

This method costs no additional resources since you are reloading before the Prismatic Shard and Cinder Shards are consumed. Note that the game uses a random seed per day, so you will need to advance to a new day (sleep and wake up) to get a new random seed if the same day keeps giving the same result.

Priority Order for Enchanting

If resources are limited, prioritize enchantments in this order:

  1. Bottomless on your Watering Can β€” saves time every single day for the rest of the game.
  2. Master on your Hoe β€” massive quality-of-life for tilling and artifact hunting.
  3. Master on your Pickaxe β€” zero energy mining.
  4. Crusader or Vampiric on your primary weapon β€” essential for deep Skull Cavern runs.
  5. Master on your Axe β€” Hardwood and no energy cost.
  6. Master on your Fishing Rod β€” best fishing experience.
  7. Master on your Pan β€” if you still care about panning rewards.
