Books Guide

The Books system was introduced in Stardew Valley 1.6, adding a deep layer of permanent character progression on top of the existing skill and mastery systems. Books grant permanent abilities, quality-of-life upgrades, and skill experience when read. There are 19 Power Books that unlock unique powers (reading all 19 awards the “Well-Read” achievement) and 7 Skill Books that grant experience points or other benefits. This guide covers every book in detail, explains how to obtain each one, breaks down the Bookseller’s schedule and mechanics, and provides strategies for efficient book collection.

How to Read Books

Books function as consumable items. To read a book:

  1. Place the book in the top row (active slot) of your inventory.
  2. Right-click (PC), press the use button (controller), or tap the screen (mobile).
  3. A reading animation plays, the book is consumed, and its permanent effect is applied immediately.

Key details:

  • Once read, a Power Book is recorded on the Special Items & Powers tab of your player menu. A thumbs-up icon appears on the book’s inventory sprite to indicate it has been read.
  • Most Power Books can be read additional times for bonus skill XP (see the Re-reading Books section below).
  • Skill Books can be read unlimited times for repeated XP gains.
  • In Multiplayer, book effects only apply to the player who reads the book. Each player must obtain and read their own copy.
  • All books (both Power Books and Skill Books) are a loved gift for Penny, making them excellent gifts if you have duplicates.

The Bookseller

The Bookseller is a traveling merchant who visits Pelican Town to sell books. His shop is run by Marcello (the hot air balloon pilot from Harvey’s ten-heart event). The shop is located across the river above JojaMart (or the Movie Theater, if the community center route was completed).

Visiting Schedule

The Bookseller visits twice per season on random dates drawn from a fixed pool of possible dates. On visiting days, a balloon icon appears on the calendar, and a message at the start of the day announces: “The Bookseller is in town today.” The shop is open all day.

SeasonPossible Visiting Days
Spring11, 12, 21, 22, 25
Summer9, 12, 18, 25, 27
Fall4, 7, 8, 9, 12, 19, 22, 25
Winter5, 11, 12, 19, 22, 24

Two dates are randomly selected from each season’s pool at the start of that season. Because the dates are randomized, you cannot predict exact visits in advance — check your calendar each season for the balloon markers.

Shop Stock

Each visit, the Bookseller offers a rotating selection of books. Not every book is available every visit. The stock is drawn from several pools:

Always available (every visit):

BookPriceNotes
Price Catalogue3,000gAvailable from the start
Way Of The Wind pt. 115,000gAvailable from the start
Horse: The Book25,000gAvailable from the start
Ol’ Slitherlegs25,000gAvailable from the start

Conditional always-available:

BookPriceCondition
Way Of The Wind pt. 235,000gOnly appears after you have read Way Of The Wind pt. 1
Queen Of Sauce Cookbook50,000gOnly appears after collecting 100 Golden Walnuts on Ginger Island

Book Of Stars has a 25% chance to appear each visit for 15,000g.

One Skill Book at 10,000g has a 60% chance to appear (chosen randomly from Bait And Bobber, Mining Monthly, Combat Quarterly, Stardew Valley Almanac, or Woodcutter’s Weekly).

One Skill Book at 8,000g has an 80% chance to appear (same pool as above).

One Skill Book at 5,000g is guaranteed to appear (same pool as above).

Woodcutter’s Weekly additionally has a 33% chance to appear at 8,000g, independent of the other skill book slot.

One Power Book at 20,000g is guaranteed to appear starting in Year 3, chosen randomly from this pool of 11 books:

  • The Alleyway Buffet
  • The Art O’ Crabbing
  • Dwarvish Safety Manual
  • Jewels Of The Sea
  • Raccoon Journal
  • Woody’s Secret
  • Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Thick
  • Friendship 101
  • Monster Compendium
  • Mapping Cave Systems
  • Treasure Appraisal Guide

This means in a single Bookseller visit, you could see anywhere from roughly 5 to 8 books depending on your year and random rolls. Prioritize your gold spending carefully since the 20,000g Power Book pool rotates randomly.

Trade-In System

The Bookseller also accepts book trades. You can give him specific books in exchange for useful items. Trading only works with books whose power you have already obtained. For books with multiple obtain methods, only one trade-in option exists per book. Each trade is a one-time exchange per save file.

Trade AwayReceive
Jewels Of The Sea (1)Cave Jelly (3), River Jelly (3), or Sea Jelly (3)
Woody’s Secret (1)Hardwood (20)
Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Thick (1)Stuffing (3)
Monster Compendium (2)Slime Egg-Press (1) or Slime Incubator (1)
Book of Mysteries (1)Mystery Box (7)
Treasure Appraisal Guide (1)Spicy Eel (3) or Artifact Trove (3)
Book Of Stars (1)Fairy Dust (8)

Bait And Bobber (1)Deluxe Bait (30)
Woodcutter’s Weekly (1)Wood (100)
Mining Monthly (1)Coal (20)
Combat Quarterly (1)Monster Musk (1)

Notable trades: The Book Of Stars trade for 8 Fairy Dust is extremely valuable — Fairy Dust instantly finishes processing in kegs, furnaces, and other equipment. The Monster Compendium trade for Slime Incubator is also worthwhile for slime farming. Most other trades offer decent supplemental resources but are not essential.

Power Books (19 Total)

Power Books grant permanent abilities that fundamentally enhance your gameplay. The first time you read each Power Book, you unlock its unique power, recorded permanently on your Special Items & Powers tab. Reading all 19 unlocks the “Well-Read” achievement.

The books below are organized by category for easy reference.

Utility & Information Books

Price Catalogue

  • Effect: You can now see the sell value of every item in your inventory and chests. The gold value is displayed directly on the item tooltip, making it trivial to compare item values at a glance.
  • Bookseller Price: 3,000g (always in stock)
  • Other Sources: None — this can only be purchased from the Bookseller.
  • Re-reading Bonus: None.
  • Notes: This is one of the most useful quality-of-life upgrades in the game, especially early on when you are learning which crops and foraged items are most profitable. Available from Year 1, cheap, and always in stock. There is no reason to delay picking this up.

Mapping Cave Systems

  • Effect: You receive a 50% discount on Marlon’s item retrieval service at the Adventurer’s Guild. Normally, retrieving a lost item costs 1,000g (or 500g with the Burglar’s Ring). With this book, the cost drops to 500g (or 250g with the ring).
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Found in a box in the back of the Adventurer’s Guild. The door to this room only opens after you have slain at least 1,000 monsters total.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Combat XP.
  • Notes: This is a niche but free power if you are already deep into combat. Most players will naturally hit 1,000 kills before Year 3, so check the back room of the guild before buying this. The cost reduction is helpful if you frequently die in the Skull Cavern with valuable items.

Animal Catalogue

  • Effect: You can access Marnie’s shop at any time, even when Marnie is not present at her ranch. The full shop inventory (animals, animal supplies) becomes available 24/7.
  • Bookseller Price: Not sold by the Bookseller.
  • Other Sources: Purchased directly from Marnie for 5,000g, starting in Year 2.
  • Re-reading Bonus: None.
  • Notes: Extremely convenient for late-game players who want to buy animals on their own schedule without waiting for Marnie’s shop hours (9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, closed on Mondays and Tuesdays). Not available in Year 1, so plan accordingly.

Treasure Appraisal Guide

  • Effect: You will fetch a better price when selling artifacts to Gunther at the Museum. Donated artifacts sell for more gold than they normally would.
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Found inside Artifact Troves (can be cracked open at the Blacksmith for 25g each).
  • Re-reading Bonus: 20 XP in each skill (100 XP total across all five skills).
  • Notes: A passive income boost if you frequently find Artifact Troves while mining or panning. The price improvement on artifacts is modest but adds up over time. If you find one in an Artifact Trove, that is a free power.

Movement & Speed Books

Way Of The Wind pt. 1

  • Effect: You run slightly faster. This is a permanent base movement speed increase that stacks with all other speed bonuses.
  • Bookseller Price: 15,000g (always in stock)
  • Other Sources: None — only available from the Bookseller.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 20 XP in each skill (100 XP total).

Way Of The Wind pt. 2

  • Effect: You run even faster, stacking with the bonus from pt. 1. Combined, the two books provide a very noticeable movement speed increase.
  • Bookseller Price: 35,000g (always in stock after reading pt. 1)
  • Other Sources: None — only available from the Bookseller, and only after you have already obtained the pt. 1 power.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 20 XP in each skill (100 XP total).
  • Notes: At 35,000g this is the second most expensive book after the Queen Of Sauce Cookbook. The combined speed boost from both Wind books is significant and saves a considerable amount of time over hundreds of in-game days. Buy pt. 1 first, then save up for pt. 2 when you have excess gold.

Ol’ Slitherlegs

  • Effect: You run significantly faster through grass and crops. This only applies when moving through tiles with grass or growing crops, not on bare paths or floors.
  • Bookseller Price: 25,000g (always in stock)
  • Other Sources: None — only available from the Bookseller.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 20 XP in each skill (100 XP total).
  • Notes: Very powerful if your farm layout involves walking through crop fields frequently. Pair this with the Wind books for maximum traversal speed. Less useful if you have paved paths everywhere.

Horse: The Book

  • Effect: You gain a little extra speed when riding a horse. This stacks with the base horse speed and other speed bonuses.
  • Bookseller Price: 25,000g (always in stock)
  • Other Sources: None — only available from the Bookseller.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 20 XP in each skill (100 XP total).
  • Notes: Horse riding is already fast, so this is a lower priority compared to the Wind books. However, if you frequently ride your horse between distant locations (farm to town to mines), the cumulative time savings are meaningful. Not useful if you do not own a horse or stable.

Combat Books

Monster Compendium

  • Effect: Monsters have a small chance to drop double loot. When this triggers, a monster yields two copies of its normal drop instead of one.
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Dropped by slain monsters anywhere in the game (Mines, Skull Cavern, Volcano Dungeon, Quarry Mine, etc.).
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Combat XP.
  • Notes: This is a combat-scaling power — the more monsters you kill, the more value you get from the double drop chance. Particularly valuable in the Skull Cavern where monster drops include Iridium Ore and other high-value items. If you spend a lot of time in combat, this book pays for itself over time. Try to find it as a monster drop before spending 20,000g.

Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Thick

  • Effect: You gain +1 permanent Defense. This reduces all incoming damage by 1, stacking with armor and other defense sources.
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Found by digging up Artifact Spots (the small wiggling spots on the ground) in any location.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Combat XP.
  • Notes: A flat +1 Defense is a minor but permanent combat upgrade. More useful in early-to-mid game when every point of defense matters. By late game with endgame armor, this single point is less impactful. If you dig up Artifact Spots regularly (especially in the Mountain area), you may find this for free.

Dwarvish Safety Manual

  • Effect: Bombs deal 25% less damage to you. This applies to all bomb types, including Mega Bombs and Cherry Bombs.
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Purchased from the Dwarf in the Mines (accessed after completing the Rusty Key quest in the Winter) for 4,000g.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Mining XP.
  • Notes: If you use bombs frequently for mining (especially Mega Bombs in the Skull Cavern for fast floor clearing), this is a solid safety upgrade. At only 4,000g from the Dwarf, this is one of the cheapest Power Books to obtain. Buy it from the Dwarf as soon as you have access to the Mines’ lower level — there is no reason to wait for the Bookseller.

Friendship 101

  • Effect: You become friends with people a little faster. Friendship gains from talking, gifting, and events are slightly increased.
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Awarded as a prize from the prize machine in the back room of Mayor Lewis’ Manor (the room to the right of the main entrance).
  • Re-reading Bonus: 20 XP in each skill (100 XP total).
  • Notes: The friendship boost is subtle but helpful if you are pursuing multiple heart events simultaneously or trying to max out friendships quickly. Check Lewis’ prize machine before buying — it is free if you get lucky. The prize machine costs 500g per pull.

Resource & Gathering Books

Woody’s Secret

  • Effect: Felled trees have a 5% chance to yield double the wood. When this triggers, a chopped tree produces twice its normal wood output.
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Obtained by chopping trees on your farm or in the wild.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Foraging XP.
  • Notes: A passive bonus for players who chop trees regularly. If you are harvesting large numbers of trees for wood (e.g., for building construction or selling), this can add up over time. Since you can find it by simply chopping trees, you may get this for free before Year 3.

Raccoon Journal

  • Effect: Weeds have a greater chance to yield Mixed Seeds when cleared. Mixed Seeds can be planted in any season and grow into random forageable items.
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Given as a reward for completing the second Raccoon item quest (part of the Giant Stump storyline introduced in 1.6). Also tradeable from the Raccoon Wife’s Shop for 999 Fiber.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Foraging XP.
  • Notes: More useful in early game when Mixed Seeds provide free, zero-cost crops. By late game when you are planting high-value crops, the bonus Mixed Seeds from weeds are less impactful. Complete the raccoon quests early to get this for free.

The Alleyway Buffet

  • Effect: You have a greater chance to find items in the trash. Trash cans around Pelican Town can yield valuable items, and this book improves those odds.
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Found in the gold trash can located between the Blacksmith and JojaMart (the Movie Theater), accessed through a hidden hole in the fence.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Foraging XP.
  • Notes: This is a free book if you know where to look. The gold trash can between the Blacksmith and JojaMart is easy to access once you know about the gap in the fence. Check there before spending 20,000g. Combined with the “Recycle” skill at Foraging level 4, trash picking becomes a reliable source of supplemental income and resources.

The Diamond Hunter

  • Effect: All stones (rocks, boulders, and ore nodes) have a chance to drop a Diamond when mined by hand. This applies everywhere: your farm, the Mines, the Quarry, and Ginger Island.
  • Bookseller Price: Not sold by the Bookseller.
  • Other Sources: Purchased from the Volcano Dungeon Dwarf for 10 Diamonds.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Mining XP.
  • Notes: The diamond drop chance from regular rocks is quite low, but because you break hundreds or thousands of rocks over the course of a playthrough, you will eventually see extra diamonds. The 10 Diamond cost is steep, but if you have excess diamonds from mining, this is a permanent passive income upgrade. Not available from the Bookseller at all, so the Volcano Dwarf is your only option.

Book of Mysteries

  • Effect: You have a slightly greater chance to find Mystery Boxes. Mystery Boxes can be opened by the Blacksmith (25g) and contain random items including rare books, artifacts, and resources.
  • Bookseller Price: Not sold by the Bookseller.
  • Other Sources: Found inside Mystery Boxes or Golden Mystery Boxes.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 20 XP in each skill (100 XP total).
  • Notes: This is a meta-book: you find it by opening Mystery Boxes, and it helps you find more Mystery Boxes. The increased drop rate is small but compounds over time, especially if you are actively farming Mystery Box sources. Keep opening every Mystery Box you find — eventually one will contain this book.

Fishing Books

Jewels Of The Sea

  • Effect: Fishing treasure chests now have a chance to yield roe from any fish species. Roe can be placed in a Preserves Jar to make high-value Artisan goods (Aged Roe).
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Obtained as a reward from a Fishing Treasure Chest while fishing.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Fishing XP.
  • Notes: Extremely powerful for income generation. Roe from rare fish (such as Stingray, Legend, or Lingcod) can be aged into very valuable Aged Roe. Combined with Fish Ponds that produce roe passively, this book can generate significant income. If you fish regularly and grab treasure chests, you may find this for free.

The Art O’ Crabbing

  • Effect: Crab pots have a 25% chance to yield double the normal catch. Both items will be the same species.
  • Bookseller Price: 20,000g (starting Year 3, from the random 20k pool)
  • Other Sources: Obtained as an Iridium Tier reward on either day of the SquidFest festival (Summer 12-13), if the player has not previously received it from the festival.
  • Re-reading Bonus: 100 Fishing XP.
  • Notes: Doubles the output of crab pots, making them significantly more profitable. This is particularly valuable if you maintain a large number of crab pots along your farm’s water edges or on Ginger Island. The SquidFest reward is free if you manage to reach Iridium tier, so compete in the festival before buying this.

Skill Books (7 Total)

Skill Books grant experience points (XP) in specific skills. Unlike Power Books, reading Skill Books does not count toward any achievement. However, they can be read multiple times, making them a repeatable source of skill XP. This is especially valuable for reaching Mastery levels after maxing all skills at level 10.

When you have unlocked the Mastery Cave (by reaching level 10 in all five skills), the XP from Skill Books is partially converted into Mastery points instead. The Book Of Stars grants 1,125 Mastery points, the Stardew Valley Almanac grants 125 Mastery points, and the other four skill books each grant 250 Mastery points.

Bait And Bobber

  • Effect: Grants 250 Fishing XP (or 250 Mastery points if the Mastery Cave is unlocked).
  • Bookseller Price: 5,000g — 10,000g (varies by visit).
  • Other Sources: Mystery Boxes, Golden Mystery Boxes, Fishing Treasure Chests, Artifact Spots, shaking trees with seeds, chopping trees, slaying monsters or breaking containers in the Mines/Skull Cavern/Volcano Dungeon, Lewis’ prize machine, Traveling Cart.
  • Notes: The most widely obtainable skill book. You will likely find multiple copies through normal gameplay before needing to buy one. Useful for pushing Fishing levels, which is often the slowest skill to level.

Book Of Stars

  • Effect: Grants 250 XP in all five skills (Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, and Combat) for a total of 1,250 XP. If the Mastery Cave is unlocked, grants 1,125 Mastery points instead.
  • Bookseller Price: 15,000g (25% chance to appear each visit).
  • Other Sources: Possible reward from the Raccoons (Giant Stump) after completing requests beyond the fifth one, Mystery Boxes, and Golden Mystery Boxes.
  • Notes: The most efficient single source of all-around XP in the game. One Book Of Stars is equivalent to reading one of every other skill book combined. If the Mastery Cave is unlocked, this becomes the single best source of Mastery points. The trade-in value (8 Fairy Dust) is also excellent, so consider whether you need the Mastery points more than the Fairy Dust.

Combat Quarterly

  • Effect: Grants 250 Combat XP (or 250 Mastery points).
  • Bookseller Price: 5,000g — 10,000g (varies by visit).
  • Other Sources: Same broad pool as Bait And Bobber (Mystery Boxes, Treasure Chests, Artifact Spots, trees, monster drops, prize machine, Traveling Cart).
  • Notes: Useful for reaching Combat level 10 and beyond. Combat XP from slaying monsters is plentiful, so this is lower priority than other skill books unless you are specifically grinding Mastery.

Mining Monthly

  • Effect: Grants 250 Mining XP (or 250 Mastery points).
  • Bookseller Price: 5,000g — 10,000g (varies by visit).
  • Other Sources: Same broad pool as the other skill books.
  • Notes: Mining XP accumulates naturally from breaking rocks and ore nodes. This book is most useful for pushing the last few levels if you have neglected mining, or for Mastery point grinding.

Stardew Valley Almanac

  • Effect: Grants 250 Farming XP (or 125 Mastery points).
  • Bookseller Price: 5,000g — 10,000g (varies by visit).
  • Other Sources: Same broad pool as the other skill books.
  • Notes: Farming XP is easy to come by from harvesting crops, so this is generally the lowest-priority skill book. The Mastery point yield (125) is also lower than other skill books (250). Trade this in for Pepper Poppers if you do not need the Farming XP.

Woodcutter’s Weekly

  • Effect: Grants 250 Foraging XP (or 250 Mastery points).
  • Bookseller Price: 5,000g — 10,000g (varies by visit).
  • Other Sources: Same broad pool as the other skill books, plus the Calico Egg Merchant at the Desert Festival sells it for 100 Calico Eggs.
  • Notes: Foraging XP can be harder to grind deliberately than other skills. If you need Foraging levels or Mastery points, this is a solid purchase. The Desert Festival provides an alternative acquisition method if you have excess Calico Eggs.

Queen Of Sauce Cookbook

  • Effect: Teaches all Queen of Sauce recipes that you do not already know, regardless of whether they have aired on TV yet. This is not a skill XP book — it is a recipe book.
  • Bookseller Price: 50,000g (always appears after collecting 100 Golden Walnuts).
  • Other Sources: None — only available from the Bookseller.
  • Notes: At 50,000g, this is by far the most expensive book. It is also the only way to instantly learn all remaining Queen of Sauce recipes without waiting for the right TV episode on Wednesdays (and even then, only 7 years of episodes exist, covering only some recipes). If you have been watching Queen of Sauce every Wednesday, many recipes will already be known, reducing the value. However, if you missed episodes or want the convenience of learning everything at once, this is worthwhile once you have excess gold. The 100 Golden Walnut requirement also means you need significant Ginger Island progress.

Re-reading Books

After a Power Book has been read once and its power is unlocked, reading additional copies of that same book grants bonus skill XP. This provides a reason to keep extra copies or buy duplicates from the Bookseller.

  3. Book of Mysteries (free from Mystery Boxes) — Passive upgrade that costs nothing if you find it.

  1. Woody’s Secret (free from chopping trees) — Free passive wood bonus.

  6. Queen Of Sauce Cookbook (50,000g) — Very expensive, only needed if you missed TV recipes.

Early Game vs. Late Game Recommendations

Early Game (Year 1):

Focus on books that are free or cheap and provide immediate benefits:

  • Buy the Price Catalogue (3,000g) on your first Bookseller visit. It pays for itself almost immediately by helping you identify which items to sell versus keep.
  • Buy the Dwarvish Safety Manual (4,000g) from the Dwarf as soon as you have access. If you use bombs in the Mines, this prevents self-damage.
  • Check the gold trash can between the Blacksmith and JojaMart for a free Alleyway Buffet.
  • Chop trees regularly for a chance at a free Woody’s Secret.
  • Fight monsters for a chance at a free Monster Compendium.
  • Open every Mystery Box you find for a chance at the Book of Mysteries.
  • Grab fishing treasure chests for a chance at Jewels Of The Sea.
  • Save gold — most 20,000g Power Books are not available until Year 3 anyway, so do not stress about buying them early.

Mid Game (Year 2):

  • Buy the Animal Catalogue from Marnie for 5,000g if you need 24/7 animal shop access.
  • Complete raccoon quests for a free Raccoon Journal.
  • Compete in SquidFest (Summer 12-13) and aim for Iridium tier for a free Art O’ Crabbing.
  • Start saving gold for the Year 3 Power Books (20,000g each).
  • Dig Artifact Spots for a chance at Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Thick.
  • Check Lewis’ prize machine for a chance at Friendship 101.

Late Game (Year 3+):

  • Buy 20,000g Power Books from the Bookseller as they rotate in. Check the stock each visit and buy anything you have not yet obtained from free sources.
  • Save for Way Of The Wind pt. 2 (35,000g) if you value movement speed.
  • Consider the Queen Of Sauce Cookbook (50,000g) if you have 100+ Golden Walnuts and are missing recipes.
  • Buy Skill Books for Mastery points once the Mastery Cave is unlocked. Book Of Stars is the most efficient source.
  • Trade in duplicate books at the Bookseller for valuable items, especially Book Of Stars for 8 Fairy Dust.

Trade-In Strategy

When deciding whether to trade in a book, consider the trade value versus the re-reading XP value:

  • Always trade Book Of Stars if you have already unlocked the Mastery Cave and no longer need the XP. Eight Fairy Dust is extraordinarily valuable for instant-processing artisan goods.
  • Trade Monster Compendium (costs 2 copies) for a Slime Incubator only if you plan to farm slimes. The Slime Egg-Press is less valuable since you can craft it.
  • Trade skill books you no longer need. For example, if Farming is already at Mastery, trade the Stardew Valley Almanac for Pepper Poppers. If Fishing is maxed, trade Bait And Bobber for 30 Deluxe Bait.
  • Keep books with strong re-reading bonuses if you are still grinding skill levels or Mastery points. The 100 XP re-reading bonus on combat and gathering books is worth more than most trade rewards.
  • Never trade Price Catalogue or Animal Catalogue — they have no re-reading bonus, but their trade values (not available for these books) do not apply anyway.

Tips for Collecting All 19 Power Books

  1. Check the calendar at the start of every season for Bookseller balloon markers and plan your gold budget.
  2. Prioritize free sources first — chop trees, fight monsters, dig Artifact Spots, fish for treasure chests, and open Mystery Boxes before spending gold at the Bookseller.
  3. Save 20,000g before each Bookseller visit starting in Year 3 so you can buy the rotating Power Book if it is one you need.
  4. Track which books you have using the Special Items & Powers tab in your menu. Any book you have read will appear there with a thumbs-up icon.
  5. Do not forget the non-Bookseller sources. The Diamond Hunter (Volcano Dwarf, 10 Diamonds) and Animal Catalogue (Marnie, 5,000g Year 2+) are never sold by the Bookseller. The Queen Of Sauce Cookbook requires 100 Golden Walnuts. Plan for these separately.
  6. Use the Trade-In system to get value from duplicates. Even if you have already read a book, a second copy can be traded for useful items.
  7. Gift duplicate books to Penny for a massive friendship boost. She loves all books, making this an excellent way to raise her hearts while clearing inventory.
  8. Be patient with the 20,000g rotation. With 11 books in the pool and only one appearing per visit (two visits per season), it can take many seasons to see every book. Focus on the ones that provide the most value to your playstyle first.
  9. The “Well-Read” achievement requires reading all 19 Power Books at least once. Skill Books do not count toward this achievement.
  10. In Multiplayer, each player must read their own copy of every book. Coordinate with your friends to avoid buying duplicates from the Bookseller — check who still needs which power before spending gold.
